Queer-in(g) Education: mis/uses and matterings

Submit a Presentation

Calling all educators, researchers, and advocates interested in critically exploring how queer theory has come to matter in the field of gender and sexuality education.

Join us for an online event hosted by the Sexualities and Gender special interest group of the British Education Research Association.

This event begins with a recorded keynote presentation by Professor Louisa Allen (University of Auckland) featuring insights from the recently published “Queer Studies and Education: An International Reader” (Rodriguez, Mizzi, Allen, and Cover 2023).

Following Professor Allen’s presentation, the rest of the session will include a series of 5- or 10-minute reflections from SIG and non-SIG members of whom you could be one! We invite you to offer your perspective on the journey and/or current state of the concept ‘queer’ in the field of education in ways that might explore the following key questions:

  • What is the state and status of queer research in educational studies today?
  • How is the concept of ‘queer’ being used and misused in the public domain?
  • How can we navigate the intersection of queer theory, policy, and practice?
  • How might we envision a collaborative praxis for transformative change in queer educational studies.

Speaker submission:

Submit your title, name and institutional/organisational affiliation by Thursday 13th June via the submission link on this page. Please state whether you would like a 5 or 10 minute slot. Full programme will be available on Thursday 27th June.

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage in critical dialogue, forge connections, and shape the future of queer education research. Register now and be part of the movement towards inclusivity, equity, and empowerment in gender and sexuality education studies.
