BERA Conference 2024 and WERA Focal Meeting
Programme now live
It is a great pleasure to welcome delegates from across the United Kingdom and the world to the BERA Annual Conference 2024 with the WERA Focal Meeting. BERA is delighted to be partnering with WERA for this event which will be an excellent way to celebrate BERA’s 50th anniversary and WERA’s 15th anniversary as learned societies. Building on the record-breaking attendance at both BERA and WERA 2023 conferences, we look forward to welcoming even more international delegates and providing a wonderful opportunity for delegates to disseminate research and network with like-minded colleagues from all across the world.
For this unique event, we will gather in the northern city of Manchester. Manchester is known throughout the world for its football clubs, its international cricket ground where we host our gala dinner and its vibrant music scene including in recent years Oasis, the Smiths and the Stone Roses. Manchester has always been a city that has embraced innovation from the Industrial Revolution to more recently being the location where the atom was first split. The famous Rolls Royce car was first manufactured in the city. Manchester is a melting pot of cultures and languages, with over 200 languages spoken, making it a truly diverse and enriching place to explore. That strength in diversity also applies to our community of researchers and ideas that we hope to see presented at the conference.
The people of Manchester pride themselves on their warm welcome to visitors and so we look forward to returning to this vibrant, modern city.
BERA and WERA look forward to welcoming you to our joint conference – whether you are a first-time delegate or have been to several or indeed many over the past 50 years. The BERA-WERA partnership prides ourselves on the conference being both academically rigorous and socially enriching and we look forward to seeing you in Manchester.

BERA - British Educational Research Association
For educational researchers the BERA Annual Conference is an important date in their professional year. It provides the opportunity to:
* network with existing colleagues
* support new colleagues at the start of their careers
* establish the beginnings of new collaborations
* exchange ideas with like-minded colleagues; and sometimes more profitably, with non-like-minded colleagues
* make new links with potential publishers or funders
* learn about research outside your own area and investigate possible connections
* indulge in discussions of ‘blue sky’ research that reminds you why you are a researcher
Seasoned BERA delegates could probably add several more reasons of their own as to why they return but for most it is about being part of a community of researchers. A community that is dynamic and changes over time; not just in terms of its members but in the way it does things. Participating in a vibrant conference is one way of making sure that you contribute to that change.
WERA - World Education Research Association
The World Education Research Association (WERA) is an association of national, regional, and international specialty research associations aimed at advancing education research as a scientific and scholarly field. Established on April 18, 2009 in San Diego, California. WERA aims to undertake initiatives that are global in nature and thus transcend what any one association can accomplish in its own country, region, or area of specialization. Member associations are resolved to work together to address such issues as building capacity and interest in education research, advancing education research policies and practices, and promoting the use and application of education research around the world.
Each year, WERA holds a Focal Meeting in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of a WERA member association. Focal Meetings consist of a strand of paper and symposia sessions, lectures, and other substantive activities focusing on issues of significance to education research through a world-wide perspective. Research that is comparative, cross-cultural, international, or transnational in conceptualization, scope, or design is emphasized.
