Editorship of the Curriculum Journal

The opportunity

BERA is looking for a team of editors to take on the editorship of the Curriculum Journal from the start of 2025.

The Curriculum Journal is published by Wiley on behalf of the British Educational Research Association (BERA), but its content is overseen on behalf of the Association by Editors appointed by BERA. The Curriculum Journal is an international peer-reviewed journal that publishes original contributions to the study of curriculum theory, as well as curriculum-making practices. Its impact factor is 1.6, and it has a CiteScore of 3.3 and a Journal Citation Indicator of 0.83. This is an exciting opportunity for a new team to contribute to the success of this highly regarded publication.

The current team finish their term on 31st December 2024, and we are looking for proposals to take on the journal from 1st January 2025, with the new team committing to a significant handover period through 2024.

The appointed Editorial Team will take responsibility for the content and editorial direction of the journal within the aims and scope agreed by BERA’s Publications Committee. They will work closely with an active and engaged Editorial Board, a broad range of reviewers, and an enthusiastic and effective team at Wiley.

Message from the current editors

‘We have thoroughly enjoyed our tenure as lead editors of the Curriculum Journal, having been in post since the summer of 2018. Leading the journal has been highly rewarding, enabling us to connect with and help shape the field of curriculum studies. It has allowed us to engage with international scholars across the field. Particularly satisfying has been the experience of working with a committed team of associate editors, with the wider international board, and with BERA – a group of colleagues who have provided excellent support for our work. During our editorial tenure, we have been delighted to see the journal grow its reputation as a leading outlet for curriculum scholarship, illustrated by the achievement of its first impact factor in 2022.’

Mark Priestley & Stavroula Philippou, current lead editors of the Curriculum Journal

  • How they intend to make use of the editorial support fund.

Further information

The new term will start with the 2025 volume of the journal. However, we expect the handover process to begin in summer 2024, so please indicate your availability to enable this as part of your application. This will involve some work through 2024, for example commissioning and reviewing special issue proposals for future volumes. From the summer of 2024, there will be some additional work in handling incoming manuscripts and existing copy ahead of the first issue of 2025. We would expect the new team to work with BERA and the outgoing Editors on a suitable transition timetable and process after their appointment.

Applicants should be BERA members at the time of application or commit to becoming members before taking office. Ongoing BERA membership is required of all our editorial teams.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal and would like to discuss the matter further prior to submission, then please contact Hannah Marston, BERA Publications Manager, on publications@bera.ac.uk.
