Director of Research and Development at The Academy at Shotton Hall

Thomas Martell is the director of research and development at a trust of schools in north-east England where he teaches science. His role includes leading the Shotton Hall Research School, which supports teachers and school leaders beyond the trust to develop evidence-informed practice. He is also a member of the BERA College of Reviewers.

Tom previously held multiple roles at the Education Endowment Foundation, which spanned evidence generation and dissemination. He is interested in how evidence can inform practitioners and policymakers. This hinges on producing rigorous and relevant research and supporting sophisticated evidence use.
