BERA announces Brian Simon Fund Winners

BERA is delighted to announce the winners of a new grants scheme supported by the use of the Brian Simon fellowship fund.

These grants are made possible due to a gift from the family of Brian Simon, a leading post-war educationalist and former BERA President. The fund is held in trust by BERA and we released funds for these four projects to be published in our 50th anniversary year. Due to a large of number of excellent applications we have also chosen to fund an additional fifth project.

We believe that the chosen projects are independent, imaginative, scholarly and dedicated to educational advance. The key output of each project will be a final report of between 2,000-3,000 words to be published by BERA in 2024.

The following projects have been funded:

History of Education

Daniel Laqua, “Rehearsals for Democracy: Student Life in Central and Eastern Europe, 1919–1923

Miles Smith  (ECR), “Far away from the Ivory Tower: the impact of university education on disadvantaged people and their communities.”

Education and Democracy

Fengling Tang “Shifting youth environmental activism from the public imagination to community engagement: implications for education for sustainability in the 21st Century”

Lee Jerome “Agenda for Citizenship Education (ACE): a co-constructed agenda for education for democratic citizenship”

Rebekah Ackroyd (ECR), “Land:  what is it for and how do we decide? A democratic study of children and their families’ perspectives”
