BERA Doctoral Thesis Award Winner

Emily Macleod, Dr

Honorary Postdoctoral Fellow at University College London

I completed my PhD at IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education & Society in 2023. Within the context of national and international teacher shortages, my doctoral studied whether and why young people do, or do not, want to become teachers when they older, especially in the sciences, where shortages are worst. My thesis used mixed methods, including secondary analysis of a national longitudinal dataset of young people's career aspirations (the ASPIRES project).

Before beginning my PhD I worked on the ASPIRES research project for four years as a Research Officer; first at King's College London before moving to the IOE. Before that I was a secondary school teacher in the north of England where I mainly taught French.
