Lecturer at University of Leeds

Deirdre McKenna recently joined the University of Leeds as a lecturer in English for academic purposes (EAP), having previously worked as a teaching fellow in English language teaching (ELT) at the University of Sussex where her responsibilities included convening the pre-sessional summer course, the postgraduate business communication skills module and the first-year academic skills module for psychology students. She has also held EAP posts at the Arts University Bournemouth and the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, specialising in English for specific academic purposes (ESAP) for architecture and design students. Prior to her work in EAP, Deirdre taught business English in Germany and general English in South Korea. Her research interests include: the role of language teaching in the identity of EAP practitioners; the crossover in skills development and language needs for non-native and native English-speaking students; the impact of curriculum and materials development in supporting tutors new to EAP; communities of practice in the EAP teaching sphere.
