Publishing opportunity

Join the BERJ editorial board

BERA’s international peer-reviewed journal, the British Educational Research Journal (BERJ), is seeking new members to join its editorial board.

This opportunity is now closed.

The editors of BERJ are seeking expressions of interest from academics who would like to join its editorial board, which comprises both UK-based and international members. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development, success and strategic direction of this influential journal.

The journal’s current board consists of approximately 20 members and the editors are seeking to expand the board in order to ensure diversity of geographical location and research expertise. We welcome applications from academics and researchers who:

  1. Have reviewed for BERJ.
  2. Have research expertise that aligns with BERJ’s six priority areas (see Hoskins et al., 2024), particularly Artificial Intelligence and Education; Gaming Education and Gaming Culture in Institutional Contexts; Gender and Intersectionality; Special, Additional Needs and Inclusive Education.
  3. Are based in the Global South and North America; or are UK-based academics from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

Members of the board are expected to support the journal in the following ways:

  • Complete peer review of five articles submitted to BERJ per academic year in a timely fashion.
  • Review special issue proposals.
  • Be involved in selecting papers for the annual BERJ Editors’ Choice Award.
  • Attend a virtual meeting of the board once a year to discuss the development of the journal.
  • Promote the journal by, for example, using social media, mentioning the journal at conferences/events, encouraging high-quality submissions from individual personal networks and encouraging contacts to read the journal.
  • Help the editors to organise workshops on how to get published in BERJ for geographical areas where there are a large number of submissions to the journal.
  • UK members must be members of BERA for the duration of their term on the board. International members are encouraged to join BERA.

We are very keen that editorial board members consider acting as mentors for the journal’s forthcoming Early Career Peer Reviewer Scheme.

New members of the board will be appointed for an initial three-year term. The editorial board has both a chair and vice-chair who help to co-ordinate the work of the board. Once the expanded board is in place, members may be asked to form sub-groups responsible for certain remits, such as reviewing special issue proposals.

BERJ publishes articles of interest to researchers in education and has rapidly become a major focal point for the publication of educational research throughout the world. The journal is interdisciplinary in approach, and includes reports of case studies, experiments and surveys, discussions of conceptual and methodological issues and of underlying assumptions in educational research, accounts of research in progress, and book reviews. You can find out more about BERJ here.

This notice should be read alongside the standard Terms of Reference for the management of BERA journals.

To apply, please click ‘Apply Now’ at the top of this page. You will need to provide a CV (maximum 3 pages) and a brief account (maximum 500 words) explaining what you would bring to the editorial board.

Applications close at midnight on 8 April 2024.

If you would like to discuss the matter further prior to submission, please contact publications@bera.ac.uk.
