Early Career Researcher Network: Convenor Opportunity

The BERA Early Career Researcher (ECR) Network aims to offer support to those who are in the process of completing their masters or doctorate in education, as well as those who have completed their studies within the past 5 years, or longer if including a career break. It seeks to meet the needs of not only those who are pursuing studies and/or careers as researchers within Higher Education, but also those who are practitioners seeking to undertake research to support their development.
ECR Network Convenors
ECR Network Convenors are volunteers who collectively coordinate, develop, and oversee the network’s activities. The convenor team meets regularly to plan the year’s work and to divide responsibilities among themselves. While roles are shared and tailored to individual strengths and availability, each convenor should be prepared to take on any of the tasks outlined below during their term.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Communication
Research Intelligence
Each issue of Research Intelligence (published quarterly) includes a two-page ECR Network feature (approx. 1,000 words). This piece highlights timely topics relevant to early career researchers and provides updates from the network. One or more convenors will be responsible for commissioning, writing, and editing this content, with support from BERA’s Publications Manager.
ECR Newsletter
A termly newsletter is sent to all ECR members in the network. While compiled by the BERA office, convenors are encouraged to contribute news, updates, and relevant opportunities.
Events and Activities
The ECR Network delivers a programme of annual events, co-organised by the convenors and regional reps. Responsibilities for these are agreed collectively at convenor meetings, with each convenor taking a lead on one or more activities.
ECR Coffee Hour
Held twice a year, these virtual sessions provide informal opportunities for ECRs to connect. Convenors are expected to attend and take turns chairing the sessions.
Annual Symposia Series
The team selects a yearly theme for the ECR symposia series. Each convenor leads or co-leads the planning of one symposium, including recruiting a chair and discussants. BERA staff provide logistical support with marketing, registration, and event delivery.
Writing Workshop
An annual writing workshop supports ECRs in developing academic writing skills. One or more convenors will organise the session and identify suitable speakers or facilitators.
ECR Conference
Convenors contribute to planning the annual ECR Conference, including helping to set the theme, promoting the event, and attending on the day.
BERA Annual Conference
The ECR Network typically has a presence at BERA’s Annual Conference. This may include a social event, a networking session, or a dedicated lecture. Convenors and reps receive complimentary registration in return for contributing to these activities.
Awards and Judging
The convenor team is responsible for reviewing applications and judging several ECR-focused awards:
-
Undergraduate Award: For recent graduates in a field related to educational research.
-
ECR Career Development Fellowship: A support package for post-doctoral ECRs, especially those in insecure employment.
Convenors may be asked to judge additional awards as they arise.
Governance and Representation
Convenor Meetings
Convenors attend twice-yearly meetings with BERA office staff to plan upcoming activities and help shape the strategic direction of the ECR Network.
Additional Representation Opportunities
Convenors may be selected or invited to take on additional roles, including:
-
ECR Rep on BERA Council (4-year term, full Council membership)
-
BERA’s representative in WERA’s Doctoral and Early Career Network (DEC)
-
Regional Rep for Scotland to attend the SERA Conference
-
Regional Rep for Wales to attend conferences relevant to Welsh education
Term and Recruitment
Convenors serve a three-year term, which may be renewed.
