Publishing opportunity

Editorship of the British Educational Research Journal (BERJ)

The opportunity

BERA is looking for a team of editors to take on the editorship of the British Educational Research Journal (BERJ) from the start of 2024.

The journal is a major focal point for the publication of educational research from across the globe, and this is an exciting opportunity for a new team to contribute to the success of this influential and highly regarded publication. BERJ’s Impact Factor is 2.133 and the journal ranks 160th out of 267 in the Education and Educational Research category.

The appointed Editorial Team will take responsibility for the content and editorial direction of the Journal within the aims and scope agreed by BERA’s Publications Committee. They will work closely with an active and engaged Editorial Board, a broad range of reviewers, and an enthusiastic and effective team at Wiley.

Full details of the expectations, opportunities and application process can be downloaded from this page. This notice should also be read alongside the standard Terms of Reference for the management of BERA Journals.

A message from the current editors

‘In the fast-moving world of academic publishing, journal editors play a key role in ensuring that sound academic judgement is at the centre of decision making. This is what makes editing the British Educational Research Journal a rewarding task.’

David Aldridge, Gert Biesta & Emma Wainwright, current editors of BERJ

Applications

We are seeking team proposals that include a minimum of two proposed editors. To apply, teams should set out in an accompanying statement the following elements:

  • Their vision and ambitions for the Journal.
  • Relevant experience in the field.
  • Analysis of the implications of open access on BERJ and how this might influence the team’s management of and strategies for the Journal.
  • How they plan to operate including the division of responsibilities between editors and associate editors.
  • An approximate percentage of the time each proposed editor will be able to allocate to the journal in a normal working week.
  • How they intend to make use of the editorial support fund.

Please include a short CV (2–3 pages) for each proposed editor. The CVs should be collated into one single document.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 23 January 2023

Further information

While applications are not restricted to UK-based scholars, we expect any proposed team to include a significant proportion of UK-based academics for both practical and editorial reasons. The team as a whole will need to demonstrate a connection to and understanding of the research landscape in the UK and also be available for in-person meetings with one another, the publisher and BERA.

This opportunity has arisen because the term of the current team of editors for BERJ will be coming to an end in December 2023, and an open call for editors is required at this point, in accordance with the Terms of Reference for the BERA Journals. BERA is now inviting applications from all interested and eligible scholars. Please note members of the current editorial team are eligible to apply.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal and would like to discuss the matter further prior to submission, then please contact Hannah Marston, BERA Publications Manager, on publications@bera.ac.uk.
