Stephen McKinney, Professor

Stephen J. McKinney is a Professor in the School of Education, University of Glasgow. He has worked in Education for over thirty years. At the University of Glasgow, he has been the Head of Department of Religious Education (2008-2010), the leader of a research and knowledge group, Creativity, Culture and Faith (2012-2017) and the leader of a research and teaching group, Pedagogy, Praxis and Faith (2017-2022).

Stephen is a member of the European Educational Research Association Council. He is the President of the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain and is a past President of the Scottish Educational Research Association. He is currently the co-editor of the Scottish Educational Review.

Stephen’s research interests include the impact of poverty on education and social justice, Catholic schools and faith schools, and he has published very widely on all of these topics. He has published more than 250 research articles, books, book chapters, research reports and research briefings. This includes a major edited book McKinney, S.J. and McCluskey, R. (eds) (2019) A History of Catholic Education and Schooling in Scotland: New Perspectives. Palgrave MacMillan. He has co-edited four special editions of the Journal of Religious Education with Sean Whittle.
