Karenza is a Lecturer in Sociology of Crime at Newcastle University, UK, and co-convenor of the British Sociological Association’s Youth Study Group. Karenza has researched drug use, markets and policies for 18 years. She focuses on alcohol, illicit medications, novel psychoactive substances (NPS) and illegal drug consumption in youth leisure spaces/times, including raves, nightclubs, festivals and afterparties. Her work explores drug prevalence, patterns, emerging trends, alongside meanings and motivations of drug use, and the impact of the War on Drugs on young people. In 2019 she wrote the first report of its kind laying out a pragmatic ‘roadmap’ towards the legal regulation of the popular dance drug MDMA/Ecstasy for the Beckley Foundation.
