Israel Eguaogie

Belfast City of Sanctuary and Diverse Youth NI

Israel Eguaogie is a community coordinator for Belfast City of Sanctuary, an organisation that works to create a welcoming environment for refugees, asylum-seekers, and new communities in Belfast. Israel founded and currently serves as a Director for Diverse Youth NI, a youth organisation that aims to give young people from BME communities the opportunity to see and appreciate their environment and the world around them.

Born in Nigeria and raised in Germany, Eguaogie moved to Northern Ireland in 2008 to continue his education.
His own experiences with migration and discrimination fueled his desire to understand the effects of migration on families and children. Eguaogie's path led him to become involved with Belfast City of Sanctuary, where he started on the management committee in 2017 and served as chairperson from 2018 to 2021. He has also been involved with the Minority Community Network, aiming to highlight the positive contributions of ethnic minorities in Northern Ireland.
Eguaogie has a strong connection with Queen's University Belfast, where his wife studied for her PhD and which he praises for its outreach work and commitment to inclusion.
