Subjects Leader Postgraduate Studies at Leeds Arts University

Frances Ann Norton’s current research investigates strategies to develop student critical thinking, using Community of Inquiry (CoI) as a methodology with non-traditional and lifelong learners. A conceptual framework built on the ideas of educational philosophers Garrison et al (2000) on CoI, Brown (1998) on concept of informal learning and Lipman (2010) on ideas of cooperation and dialogue, are the lens through which this presentation is contextualised with lifelong learners in an Art University. Critical thinking helps articulate voice for students as they debate, question and investigate while finding connection, citizenship and community through their decolonised, intergenerational narratives. Critical thinking has helped develop cultural and social capital, social mobility and personal growth for adults.
