David Higginbottom

Cross-Phase Assistant Headteacher at Gosport & Fareham Multi-Academy Trust

David is a cross-phase Assistant Headteacher at the Gosport & Fareham Multi-Academy Trust (GFM) and is Director of the GFM’s Institute of Education. With ten years of teaching experience, as a Geography teacher in the secondary sector, David is now responsible for whole staff professional learning and continued professional development opportunities across the GFM. He has been a Sixth Form coordinator for Geography, a pastoral tutor and an accredited Lead Practitioner. David has worked with trainee teachers and early career phase teachers for much of his career, supporting and mentoring PGCE trainees, NQTs and facilitating training for School Direct and SCITT trainees. He has presented at numerous teaching and learning conferences and has delivered evidence-informed CPD to colleagues within the GFM community of schools and beyond. More recently, David has delivered the taught programme on the Secondary PGCE Geography course at the University of Southampton, has been a member of the University of Southampton’s mentorship working party group and he is also the Director of the LEARN Gosport and Fareham Alliance, working closely with colleagues from the HISP Research School. David has a firm belief that collaborative working, evidenced-informed teaching and sharing best practice is at the heart of sustainable school improvement and he is passionate about enabling and supporting colleagues to engage in rigorous educational enquiry and research in order to drive ‘next practice’ through enhanced understanding.
