Caryn Onions, Professor

Head of Research and Development at The Mulberry bush

I am a child and adolescent psychotherapist and a practitioner researcher at The Mulberry Bush, a residential therapeutic special school for children aged 5 -13. Between 2004 and 2017 I was the clinical lead, and in 2017 I set up Mulberry Bush Research after completing my doctorate at The University of Exeter. My research looked at the experiences of parents and carers having a child in a residential setting. Before coming to the Mulberry Bush I worked in CAMHS, and various social and healthcare settings primarily with looked after children and their families. I also have a clinical interest in parent-infant psychotherapy, teaching and clinical supervision, plus a long association with Oxpip (the Oxford parent-infant project). My research interest is in therapeutic residential child care, particularly what is it that makes a setting therapeutic.
