Publishing opportunity

Editorship of Review of Education

The opportunity

BERA is seeking a team of editors to take on the editorship of Review of Education from the start of 2024.

Review of Education was launched in 2013 and has rapidly become a unique and highly regarded publication of extended scholarly works of major national and international significance. The journal has gone from strength to strength under the current team of editors and received an impressive first Impact Factor of 2.4 in 2023. We are seeking a new team of editors to take on this growing journal and guide it to further successes.

The appointed Editorial Team will take responsibility for the content and editorial direction of the Journal within the aims and scope agreed by BERA’s Publications Committee. They will work closely with an active and engaged Editorial Board, a broad range of reviewers, and an enthusiastic and effective team at Wiley.

Full details of the expectations, opportunities and application process can be downloaded from this page. This notice should also be read alongside the standard Terms of Reference for the management of BERA Journals.

Message from the current editors

‘As a team, we have really enjoyed the experience of editing Review of Education over the years, and we would thoroughly recommend academic colleagues putting forward an application to take on the editorship of the journal. Being a journal editor offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to education research, gain insights into academic publishing, and build networks both in the UK and internationally. The publishers are helpful. Review of Education is a successful journal that is growing in output and we look forward to seeing it go from strength to strength in the years to come.’

Stephen Gorard & Nadia Siddiqui, current lead editors of Review of Education

Applications

We are seeking team proposals that include a minimum of two proposed editors. To apply, teams should set out in an accompanying statement the following elements:

  • Their vision and ambitions for the Journal.
  • Relevant experience in the field.
  • Analysis of the implications of open access on Review of Education and how this might influence the team’s management of and strategies for the Journal.
  • How they plan to operate including the division of responsibilities between editors and associate editors.
  • An approximate percentage of the time each proposed editor will be able to allocate to the journal in a normal working week.
  • How they intend to make use of the editorial support fund.

Please include a short CV (2–3 pages) for each proposed editor. The CVs should be collated into one single document.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 18th September 2023.

Further information

While applications are not restricted to UK-based scholars, we expect any proposed team to include a significant proportion of UK-based academics for both practical and editorial reasons. The team as a whole will need to demonstrate a connection to and understanding of the research landscape in the UK and also be available for in-person meetings with one another, the publisher and BERA.

This opportunity has arisen because the term of the current team of editors for Review of Education will be coming to an end in December 2023, and an open call for editors is required at this point, in accordance with the Terms of Reference for the BERA Journals. BERA is now inviting applications from all interested and eligible scholars. Please note members of the current editorial team are eligible to apply.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal and would like to discuss the matter further prior to submission, then please contact Hannah Marston, BERA Publications Manager, on publications@bera.ac.uk.
