Job Opportunity – BERA Administrator

The British Educational Research Association (BERA) has a new opportunity available for an Administrator to join our team. The BERA Office operates on a flexible working arrangement with some core days in the office (currently based at UCL IOE in Bloomsbury) required of all staff but flexibility is a central part of our offer. In return you will receive a competitive salary of £23,000-£26,000 per annum. This role may be available part-time or as part of a job share for the right candidate(s).

Main purpose of the Administrator role:

You will work closely with colleagues in the BERA Office providing professional support to ensure the effective management of the very varied flow of work. You will also maintain effective communications with BERA members and volunteers and provide a ‘front office’ service for external contacts.

You will advance BERA’s strategic priorities, by:

  • Providing administrative support to the association
  • Working with colleagues to support BERA’s meetings or events
  • Providing office support and working with senior colleagues to ensure our financial and office records are maintained

As our Administrator you will report to BERA’s Finance and Governance Manager but you will work across the office team.

The BERA Office and Benefits:

BERA has a small central office, designed to manage the day-to-day business of the Association. Its work is overseen by a Chief Executive appointed by Council, who is responsible for, and has oversight of, all BERA’s functions and activities. Our staffing structure can be seen alongside this specification.

We are in the process of enhancing all our terms and conditions and the post holder will be invited to transfer into these once finalised.

All roles are externally evaluated before being graded. BERA roles are rated against a competency framework which can be found alongside the details for this role. There are 4 primary grades within our structure with 4 being the most senior. This role is a Grade 1.

As our Administrator you will need the following skills and experience:

  • Proven administrative skills with the ability to develop and maintain an overview of a complex workload
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent IT skills and computer literacy and familiarity with the Microsoft suite of software
  • Highly numerate with experience of financial administration
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to deal sensitively and discretely with confidential information
  • Proven experience of managing complex processes and taking a proactive approach
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of people
  • Excellent record keeping skills

The following skills and experience are also desirable:

  • Experience of governance support including drafting papers/reports and taking minutes for meetings
  • Experience of maintaining websites, and of using related technologies (we use WordPress)
  • Attention to detail and experience of managing a database or CRM system
  • Experience in office administration including diary management, travel arrangements and meeting preparation
  • Experience of working for a membership organisation/charity
  • An understanding of the higher education or research environment
