Creative and Innovative Methodologies in Educational Research

Methodological innovation within the social sciences is a highly contested topic and raises a number of questions:

  • Who determines what is and isn’t creative/innovative?
  • Is methodological innovation positioned as being key to pushing forward the impact of social research?
  • Are they anything new – or have we always been creative/innovative in research?

Methodological innovation in educational research can take many forms and it can encompass creative and arts-based methods, narrative methods, digital methods, and mixed methods. The potential of creative and innovative methodologies has arguably been evidenced and in recent years they have grown in prominence, but how might researchers ensure that they are employing such methods appropriately and effectively?

This one-day symposium is jointly organised by the PGR/ECR networks of BERA and SERA and is supported by the BERA Research Methodology in Education SIG. It seeks to bring together postgraduate research students (PGRs) and early career researchers (ECRs) in education to explore and discuss methodological innovation and creativity in educational research.

The event features two keynote presentations outlining the debates around creative and innovative methodologies and critically reflecting on their use. It also features interactive workshops in which attendees will have the opportunity to engage in different creative/innovative methodologies. Finally, PGRs/ECRs will have the chance to meet up with fellow colleagues across UK, exploring/reflecting on how they have used or might use creative and innovative methodologies in their research.
