British Educational Research Association (BERA)
Approach to endorsing candidates to Chair the Education Sub-panel, and nominating members of the Sub-panel, for REF 2021
As the learned society supporting and promoting educational research across all fields, and across the whole of the United Kingdom, BERA is committed to supporting a fair and appropriate outcome for education in the Research Excellence Framework 2021 as shown in our response to the HEFCE consultation, The Sub-Panel for Education carries significant responsibility for achieving this.
BERA has a role in endorsing applicants for Chair of the Education Sub-panel (should candidates approach the Association for an endorsement). The call for applications can be found here
BERA is listed as a nominating body for candidates for membership of the Education Sub-panel. BERA Council wishes to nominate a knowledgeable, skilled, diverse and talented pool of candidates for membership of the Sub-panel, giving appropriate representation across the field of educational research.
At its September meeting, Council asked Professor John Leach to set up a process to manage endorsements and nominations from members of BERA. Council were keen to ensure that the process of endorsing and nominating members should be viewed as legitimate and transparent by BERA members. John is a new member of BERA Council, and a former Education Sub-panel member from RAE2008 and REF2014 (on which he served as Sub-panel deputy-Chair). He is a member of the Royal Society/British Academy joint working group on educational research .
He does not intend to join the Education Sub-panel for a third time, and was therefore judged by Council to be well-placed to manage the process on behalf of BERA.
John will be joined by two distinguished educational researchers to support the task of producing endorsements and nominations:
Professor Margaret Brown, former President of BERA and Education Sub-panel Chair (RAE2008)
Professor Andrew Pollard, former BERA Council member, Education Sub-panel Chair (REF2014) and Director of the ESRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme
The group will be working to ensure that all nations and all fields are appropriately represented through nominations, and that an appropriately diverse cross-section of BERA members are nominated to the Sub-panel.
