The BERA Race, Ethnicity and Education SIG has an opening for a convenor.

This SIG is active in working to promote issues of racial education and equity with international and national colleagues.

Research interests 

• Critical Race Theory 
• Intersectionality with feminism, able-ism, social class etc.
• Black and Asian student teachers oppressions
• Minority ethnic people’s lived experiences of barriers, hurdles and successes
• Racism and anti-racism in formal and informal educational institutions
• Culturally responsive pedagogy
• Black Men in higher education
• Black Leaders and Managers in Higher Education

SIG aims:

• Hold regular Members’ meetings that listen to, represent their voices to BERA.
• Encourage high-quality academic research, through invitations to write abstracts for BERA Annual conference and its other events across the year.
• Develop the work of Early Career Researchers through inviting academic presentations at Members’ meetings.
• Disseminate our work and events and provide a space online, via ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).
• Encourage members to be involved in other BERA work, such as BERA Council and other committees.

If you would like to be considered, key aspects of the Convenors’ role include:

• Preparing text for a regular (ideally once per term) newsletter to SIG members.
• Hosting at least one annual SIG forum meeting for all members (organised via the BERA office)
• Encouraging submissions of individual papers and symposia for BERA conference.
• Reviewing abstracts or acting as a third reviewer.
• Grouping together abstracts for the conference.
• Succession planning.

• SIG Forum Meetings
• BERA Conference
• Social media
• Helping shape the BERA Race Equity Policy

If multiple expressions of interest are received an election will be run.

By agreeing to assume a position of SIG convenor, individuals are committing to fulfilling the responsibilities and obligations that go with that role. SIG Convenors are expected to exercise their own judgment to meet the requirements listed in BERA guidance and to seek further advice from the BERA Office if in any doubt on any of these matters. If any procedures are not followed then BERA reserves the right to take whatever action may be necessary to protect BERA’s legal, financial and reputational position.

This role is intended to serve a 3 year term, finishing 30 September 2028
