The British Educational Research Association (BERA) is expanding its core team and is looking for a Publications Manager to take on our expanding portfolio.
This is a newly created role whereby you will play a key role providing professional support and leadership to our range of publications including four academic journals, a successful Blog, termly members’ magazine and other research reports. You will work closely with colleagues in the BERA Office providing professional support to ensure the effective management of our publications. Support for Journals includes managing a publications assistant’s time, overseeing the funding for all editors, supporting editorial boards and day-to-day liaison with our publishing partners.
In recent years, our membership has almost doubled and we have developed an exciting and varied events programme alongside our academic publications and increased social media presence. You will bring further innovation to this aspect of our work, by applying your professional expertise and knowledge of the changing publishing world to BERA’s work.
BERA is the largest UK-wide educational research organisation. With over 2,000 members, it is a member-led organisation dedicated to supporting educational researchers and promoting high-quality research in education. It seeks to enhance the field of study, the growth of public knowledge and critical understanding, and the application of findings for the improvement of educational policy and practice.
The BERA team currently consists of 6 staff members and carries out its work in liaison with our Council, committees and BERA members.
Please note: While you will be working permanently with BERA, the employment contract will be with UCL, and you will recieve UCL staff benefits, pension and annual leave and be subject to UCL HR terms and conditions.
You will have a thorough understanding of the changing publishing environment, particularly around soft copies, websites and social media and this will be alongside knowledge of professional publishing, ideally in an academic setting. Ideally you will also bring experience of having managed a publications processes including tendering, commissioning and overseeing production.
The successful candidate will bring a professional expertise to their work and be able to take a lead of overseeing BERA’s publications, including advising on future directions and leading innovation. You will bring the credibility to work with leading academics, editors and publishing partners. You will have had some budget management responsibility and be able to analyse and interpret financial trends in relations to our publications portfolio.
Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of software, strong oral and written communication skills is essential. The post holder will have a proven consistent ability to meet tight individual and group deadlines and to manage their own workload through effective prioritising, time management and organisational skills.
