Improving Student Success Through a Trauma Informed Approach in Higher Education

11 Apr 2022 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

The BERA Educational Effectiveness and Improvement SIG is concerned with sharing, developing and disseminating research that explores, informs and improves outcomes in education. With current priorities to support both staff and student well-being in higher education, especially as a direct result of COVID, research on the need for trauma informed practice to support student success and staff development, is even more pertinent.
Trauma informed practice recognises the existence and impact of childhood trauma on the mental, physical, social, emotional and psychological health in both children and adults. Research on the impact of childhood trauma in education is not new, and there have been many initiatives to promote trauma informed practice within schools across the UK. However, the higher education (HE) field is yet to embed this practice across HE institutions, and so Trauma Informed HE was founded.

This webinar will disseminate trauma-informed research projects that have been carried out across HE institutions in the UK and the key findings on the relationships between adverse childhood experiences and success in the sector. It will also explore the impact these have had on current practices and future provision, as well as how the projects have informed university policies and practices in order to pave the way for trauma-informed institutions.
