New SIG – Alternative Education

On September 22, 2014 BERA Council approved a new SIG – Alternative Education.

The SIG will focus on practices, history, theory and philosophy underpinning and supporting educational activity largely outside and different from ‘mainstream’schooling.

The SIG will welcome alternative educational work from before and beyond the school also – to include university teaching and learning. Key interests are any spaces where education occurs and there are the core “alternative” principles of democracy and autonomy involved. The  SIG aims to engage in discussions and activity considering education unencumbered by the sedimented problems of inequality, fear, stress and coercion inherent in modern schooling and look at educational futures involving these.
