Background

The Government remains committed to working with universities and colleges so that they can continue to provide high quality teaching and research and produce highly skilled post graduates. Its commitment to widening access to postgraduate education was highlighted back in July 2013 with the allocation of £125 million of extra funding aimed at increasing access to postgraduate education. In addition, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has pledged support for postgraduate study, increasing funding for taught and research postgraduate programmes by more than £200m to 2015. Also, following the spending review in June 2013, the government announced that from 2015-16 the National Scholarship Programme will be redesigned. This is to support postgraduate students, offering an additional funding path to support postgraduate learning

A healthy postgraduate system is vital to Britain’s continued academic and economic success. Postgraduates are a vital part of Britain’s innovation infrastructure and are an important factor in attracting companies to locate high-value operations in the UK. Postgraduates are central to the UK’s international and economic success in an increasingly competitive globalised world. Yet, whilst the demand for postgraduate skills is growing, statistics published in January 2014 by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) showed that postgraduate enrolment decreased by 6% between 2011/12 and 2012/13.
