BERA Statement on UCU Industrial Action

2 March 2018

Nick Johnson, Executive Director, says:

“BERA is aware that many of our members, as UCU members that participate in the USS (Universities Superannuation Scheme), have been taking industrial action in defence of their pension scheme. BERA is sympathetic to those colleagues and notes the strength of the feeling reflected in the outcome of the ballot of UCU members.

We are also aware of the fact that not all our members are members of the UCU, the USS pension scheme, or the universities affected by the action, and they were not balloted. BERA is a wholly independent organisation and we have a responsibility to maintain BERA business as far as possible.

The UCU has provided advice, information and answers to FAQs about the proposed strike action and the ways in which members not striking due to their institutional location can contribute to hardship funds that will be primarily directed to those most severely financially hit by the action. This can be found here:

BERA hopes that the current negotiations between the UCU and Universities UK bring about a resolution to the dispute. In the event that this is not the case, we will be providing further guidance on how BERA activities will be impacted in the face of ongoing industrial action and our response to that.”
