BERA Symposium at AERA: From Reproachment to Rapprochement: International Research Trends in Curriculum, Knowledge, and Society
30 March 2016
AERA Annual Meeting
Mon, April 11, 10:00 to 11:30am, Marriott Marquis, Level Four, Monument
BERA is pleased to host a session at this year’s American Educational Research Association’s Annual Meeting.
Papers in this session present a series of cutting-edge arguments about curriculum, knowledge, and society from international perspectives. They explore the nature and prevalence of key challenges facing the academic field of curriculum, arguing that, in addition to reproachment of governments for performativity, we should move toward rapprochement between policymakers and academics. The first two papers theorize the interconnections and inseparability of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, providing a theoretical context for the examples of curriculum practice that are part of the third and fourth papers. The third paper argues for a historical perspective on history curriculum knowledge, and the fourth uses case studies of plurilingual learning contexts to explore the effects of context on language curriculum and performance. Papers address research trends and discuss important areas for continuing and future curriculum research.
The session will include the papers:
Knowledge, Democracy, and the Curriculum: Pragmatism Beyond Scientism – Gert J. Biesta, Brunel University
Knowledge and the Message Systems of Curriculum – Dominic Wyse, Institute of Education
The Historical Thinking Movement: Historical origins and Contemporary Trajectories – Tim Keirn, California State University – Long Beach
Multilingual Education for All: Empowering Nondominant Languages and Cultures Through Multilingual Curriculum Development – Carol Benson, Teachers College, Columbia University, Itziar Elorza, University of the Basque Country
