SRHE Conference Room, 44 Bedford Row, London, WC1R 4LL

Using Habermas to evaluate pedagogic justice
Dr Monica McLean, Reader in Higher Education, School of Education, University of Nottingham

Drawing on Jurgen Habermas’ critical theory, Monica will present a conceptualisation of university pedagogy, which constructs students as future citizens and emphasises the development of ‘communicative reason’ as a goal of university teaching . She will then discuss whether such a conceptualization has any resonance with student perceptions of teaching and learning in university sociology departments, which are the focus of an ESRC-funded project ‘Quality and Inequality in university undergraduate degrees’.

Conceptualising the first year student experience: the dominance of the ‘transitions’ metaphor
Dr Paul Ashwin, Lecturer in Post-compulsory Education, Lancaster University

In this seminar, Paul will argue that the literature on the first year experience in higher education has tended to conceptualise the first year experience in terms of the transition to higher education. Whilst this conceptualisation has obvious strengths, he argues that it tends to separate students’ experiences within higher education from their experiences prior to higher education. He will show how the choice of lens that it used to characterise particular educational processes can have significant implications for the outcomes of research and the focus of recommendations for policy and practice that are made on the basis of this research.

Network Convenors: Prof. Paul Blackmore (KCL) and Prof. Joëlle Fanghanel (Thames Valley University)

BERA is delighted to provide the results of research commissioned jointly with the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) into the impacts of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) on educational research undertaken in UK higher education institutions.

The report is presented as a whole but was undertaken as two separate pieces of work. The main report is an analysis of the RAE 2008, and its impact on educational research in the UK, carried out by colleagues at the University of Oxford. This is supported by a more detailed analysis of the financial impacts of the RAE, carried out by colleagues at the Institute of Education, London. The report as a whole therefore provides a significant analysis of the impacts of the RAE 2008 on educational research in its different aspects, from the experiences of individual researchers to departmental and institutional effects and the financial implications of the funding allocations of the RAE.

Download the full report as a PDF here

* The AIESEP Website (www.aiesep.org) has been upgraded.

- For all visitors, new documents have been added in the “About us/Cagigal lectures” as well as in “Other/New publications” + “Other/AIESEP Statements on PE-CPD”. Moreover, the principles of the “Interactive sessions” that will be organized during the 2010 AIESEP World congress in A Coruna (Spain) next October are described in the “Events” section.

- For AIESEP members, the “Members’ corner” is now proposing a lot of new services. First of all, the current members’ list is now directly available. Among the other services, members will find the details about the organization of the next General Assembly (principles of application process to become member of the Board of Directors as well as to participate to the vote). Last but not the least, the members’ corner proposes to the members to submit documents that they would appreciate to share with their colleagues and some practical information. To enter into the members’ corner, just type your username and password (provided by the Treasurer’s team when the membership is paid).

* The organization of the 2010 AIESEP World Congress is in progress. 350 abstracts have been received by the Scientific Committee. The reviewing process is now launched. Authors will receive information at the end of August. For any information about this, do not hesitate to contact Prof. Miguel Gonzalez Valeiro (maglez@udc.es).

* Details about the organization of the TGfU-SIG seminar planned in parallel to the 2010 AIESEP World Congress are available on the Website. For additional information about this event, contact Dinant Roode (d.roode@pl.hanze.nl).

* From April 18 – 20, 2011, the 27th ACHPER (Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation) International Conference will be organized in Adelaide (South Australia). This event will be held at the prestigious Prince Alfred College. It will merge a global outlook with local contexts as conference delegates strive to learn from recognized leaders from across Australia and around the world. The Conference website has just been released and is located at www.achper2011.com.

* In collaboration with Editors and society partners, Routledge have selected 90 research articles which engage with football and the South Africa World Cup themes. These articles are freely available until 31 July 2010. More info on www.tandf.co.uk/journals/access/worldcup.pdf and/or by Zita Balogh (Zita.Balogh@tandf.co.uk).

* Please, remember that the AIESEP Flash Newsletter will not be published until the end of August. For current information, visit the AIESEP Website (www.aiesep.org).

Ministers are expected to announce plans to work with leading history experts to create an exciting and engaging history curriculum for secondary schools. This follows growing concerns that schools are failing to give children a good understanding of history.
The Better History group, led by Dr Seán Lang, a senior Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University, is hosting a one-day conference to debate what the revised curriculum ought to look like and address how it should work in practice. Supported by Cambridge Assessment, the conference is expected to bring together 200 delegates including teachers and lecturers in secondary and higher education, policy makers, researchers and stakeholders.

The Better History group also includes Martin Roberts, a member of the academic steering committee of the Prince’s Teaching Institute, and Nicolas Kinloch, history teacher, author and former deputy of the Historical Association.

The History of Education Society (UK) Annual Conference will take place between 26th and 28th November 2010. The conference will be held at Garden Halls, 19 – 26 Cartwright Gardens, London, WC1H 9EF. The conference theme is ‘Citizenship, Religion and Education’. The provisional programme includes a presidential address by Joyce Goodman (University of Winchester, UK) and keynote papers by Thérèse Hamel (Université Laval, Quebec, Canada), Kevin Myers (University of Birmingham, UK) and Rebecca Rogers (Université Paris Descartes, France).

The place of citizenship and religion in education is complex and contested and the relationship between the two is open to debate. For example, citizenship has been associated with a particular set of moral values and behaviours as well as certain types of political participation and activity within different local, national and global arenas. Questions have also been raised about how far education for citizenship should be part of the remit of schools and other educational institutions. Similar discussions arise with regard to religion. Teaching about religion has often been perceived to be an important educational activity. Religious organisations have been significant providers of education throughout the world and religious beliefs have stimulated considerable educational activism. On the other hand, tensions between faith traditions and denominations have been fought out in educational arenas, arguably with the effect of hindering rather than advancing educational work. It has also been questioned whether religion should have any place in educational settings at all.

Proposals for papers and presentations that relate to this theme are welcomed and should connect to one of the sub-themes:

• Concepts and theories: citizenship, national identity, morality, character, spirituality, religion and faith, thinkers and theorists
• Individuals and groups: educationists, organisations, pressure groups, networks, religious/faith communities, biographies and autobiographies
• Educational institutions: private and public sectors, different phases (primary, secondary, further, higher), curriculum, activities, experiments, ethos, teachers, pupils
• Community and society: families, neighbourhoods, informal education, educational spaces;
• Historiographical issues: methodological approaches and sources for studying religion, citizenship and education.

Proposals for papers (of around 250 words) are invited, to arrive not later than Friday 4 September 2010. These should be sent as Microsoft Word email attachments to Dr Rob Freathy at j.k.freathy@ex.ac.uk.

The proposal should be set out in the following way:

There will also be a panel for postgraduate students. Papers for this will be accepted that do not necessarily address the conference theme. For further information about the postgraduate panel, please contact Sarah Winfield, Newnham College, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 9DF UK. Email: sjw91@cam.ac.uk.

Further details regarding the conference programme and pricing will appear on the History of Education Society’s website: http://www.historyofeducation.org.uk/ in early June.

Delegates are asked to make their own accommodation arrangements. There are many options. For example, the Imperial London Hotels Group http://www.imperialhotels.co.uk/ offers a range of hotels close to the main conference venue. We anticipate that the bar of the Royal National Hotel, the largest hotel in this group, will be an informal ‘hub’ on the Friday and Saturday evenings. Please contact the conference organisers if you would like to discuss other hotel options.

Lunches will be available at the Garden Halls on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Dining arrangements following a conference reception on the Friday evening will be a matter of choice, with opportunities for delegates to join one of several restaurant party groups.

The conference dinner on Saturday 27th November is optional and will be held at Il Fornello, Southampton Row.

Further enquiries should be made to Dr Rob Freathy, Graduate School of Education, University of Exeter, Heavitree Rd, Exeter, EX1 2LU, UK. Email: r.j.k.freathy@ex.ac.uk.
